5 Sun Safe Tips for Arizona Heat Awareness Week

Summer is on its way and temperatures are already on the rise in Phoenix. That’s why the National Weather Service and state officials have teamed up for Arizona Heat Awareness Week, a way to remind Arizonans to stay safe and hydrated during our periods of extreme heat.  Being careful in the heat is extremely important. Last year alone 219 people died from heat related illnesses. Here are 5 sun safe tips for Arizona Heat Awareness Week to keep you and your family safe all summer long!

  1. The hottest parts of the day are usually between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., so try to do any outdoor activity outside of those hours.
  2. Planning to hike? Don’t forget that it’s illegal to take your dog on the hiking trail if the temperature is over 100 degrees and you could be fined $2,500.
  3. When the temperature outside reaches 99 degrees, your car can heat up to 120 degrees in just one hour so please, never leave kids or pets in the car for an extended amount of time.
  4. The human body is 60% water hence why it’s so easy to get dehydrated in the summer. While drinking 8-10 glasses of water is the usual rule of thumb, it is advisable to drink 12 to 15 glasses of fluids during the summer, especially if you’re doing any strenuous activity outside.
  5. Arizona has the second highest skin cancer rate in the world. There are nearly 1,500 cases of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, diagnosed each year. So please protect yourself from direct sun exposure by covering up with light clothing, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, utilizing UV-blocking sunglasses and wearing sf 15 or higher sunblock daily.

The lack of rainfall in the state also contributes to the heat as Phoenix has not had any measurable rainfall since March 11th according to the National Weather Service. Please be safe and share these 5 sun safe tips for Arizona Awareness Week with friends and family.
