Encanto Manor Historic District

Boundaries:
South of Thomas Road to Edgemont between 7th and 15th Avenues

Encanto Manor Historic District is one of thirty-five designated historic neighborhoods in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Encanto Manor is among the smallest districts with only eighty-three homes, one church and a parish house. Two gentlemen, John Lester and L.M. Hammon platted Encanto Manor back in 1945 after purchasing the land from the estate of Jame Dorris

James Dorris was a successful retail and wholesale grocer, and he had a part in the suburban estate development of Encanto Manor. James Dorris arrived in Phoenix in 1888 and by 1892, he had established a grocery store at the southwest corner of First and Washington streets. His grocery store was to be the “finest and largest grocery store” in the city.

Encanto Manor Historic District backs to the 18-hole championship Encanto Golf Course, which is the third oldest course in Arizona, built in 1935. Amenities include a driving range, pro shop, golf clinics, tournaments, practice greens and youth lessons.

Historic Homes:
The homes were built between 1945 and 1950 in Encanto Manor. The majority of the homes are Ranch or Transitional Ranch, with an east coast flair in the details, such as awnings, shutters, large lush lawns and mature shade trees.

The homes built in Encanto Manor Historic District are generous in size, especially for the era and situated on larger lots to allow for ample front yards. The average square foot is approximately 2,000 with at least three bedrooms and two baths. There are twenty-six homes that back to Encanto Golf Course and no house is further than one block.
