Encanto Palmcroft Historic District

Encanto Palmcroft Historic District

Boundaries:
Encanto Boulevard to McDowell Road between 7th and 15th Avenues

Encanto Palmcroft Historic District was once considered the ideal suburban community in downtown Phoenix. The word “croft” means little garden and the word “encanto” means magic spell or charm, which is exactly what you will find in this seventy-five-year-old neighborhood.

The first 80-acres of Encanto Palmcroft were developed between 1927 and 1928 by Dwight B. Heard, who was also the founder of the Heard Museum in 1929. The plan was to create a neighborhood with winding streets, lush landscaping and houses that “looked towards each other.”

Each spring, the Encanto Palmcroft Historic Tour and Street Fair draws hundreds of paying people who come to have a look at the interiors of the beautiful historic homes.

Nearby Encanto Palmcroft Historic District is the 18-hole championship Encanto Golf Course, which is the third oldest course in Arizona, built in 1935. Amenities include a driving range, pro shop, golf clinics, tournaments, practice greens and youth lessons.

Historic Homes:
Many of the homes built in Encanto Palmcroft Historic District were built prior to World War II. Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean Revivals offer unending detail and charm in homes that were built using a variety of materials, orientations, colors and designs. Encanto Palmcroft has been found to be one of the most varied in design among all the historic districts.
