Roosevelt Historic District is one of the original neighborhoods located in downtown Phoenix, dating back to the late 1800s. Many of the concrete sidewalks in historic districts were poured prior to Arizona becoming a state in 1912.

The homes built in Roosevelt were constructed for the elite, and in the early twentieth century, Roosevelt was home to distinguished members of the community, such as doctors, mayors, Supreme Court justices, governors and other socially prominent citizens.  In 1983, Roosevelt Historic District was officially recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. ‚Äč

Downtown Phoenix, Arizona is well-known for its arts and cultural vibe. Roosevelt Row Arts District (RoRo) begins at 7th Avenue and heads east to 16th Street, from Interstate 10 south to Fillmore Street. The Roosevelt Row Arts District includes the historic communities of FQ Story, Willo, Roosevelt, Grand Avenue and Garfield Evans Churchill.

Historic Homes:
Homes built in Roosevelt range from 1,800 square feet to 3,000 square feet, and considered the largest historic homes built in downtown Phoenix. Most homes were a Craftsman Bungalow style with a least four bedrooms and more than one bathroom and built for the elite citizens of that era.

Comfort and efficiency were important in the design of these homes, along with quality of construction and workmanship. The bungalows built in Roosevelt were not cookie-cutter and most homes have large, wide porches that provided plenty of shade. People have often compared the style of the homes in Roosevelt to homes built in the Midwest or “back east.”
